This coil is for use where a ballast resitor is used to aid starting. Whilst the starter is being operated the ballast is shorted out, giving the coil the full 12 volts. When the key is released the current is drawn through the ballast lowering the voltage by 2 or 3 volts. This coil is a direct replacement for the Lucas DLB102. The coil body is 55mm diameter and the coil tower is made from phenolic resin. Complete with fixing clip. (Not Lucas branded)

This coil is used for electronic ignition systems where the mechanical points system ("make & break") is substituted by an electronic switching system. It is a direct replacement for the Lucas DLB193. The coil body is 55mm diameter and the coil tower is made from polyester. Coils electronic ignition systems have a lower resistance compared to a standard coil and should be used for electronic systems to preserve the working life of the system. Coils for a ballast system (CLS10251) should not be used with electronic systems. Complete with fixing clip. (Not Lucas branded)

Standard ignition coil with screw top terminal used in classic cars. The screw top gripped the high tension wire and pressed it down onto the inner contact to prevent internal sparking. This was the original method used before the introduction of the (cheaper) plug-in method and dust/moisture cap.

Ceramic ballast resistor as used in some ignition circuits where the ignition coil is less than 12 volts; the ballast resistor brings the voltage down to compensate for the lower working voltage of the coil. When the ignition key is turned to "start", the resistor is shorted out, giving the coil the full 12 volts and therefor a much hotter spark. When the ignition key is released the current has to flow through the resistor to give the coil its working voltage. An engine that starts readily but stops when the key is released, often has a defective resistor. (Not Lucas branded)

This cap is used on many 4 cylinder BMC engines fitted to the MGB, Midget, Sprite and many others. It is similar to the Lucas GDC136 cap. It is a push fit cap, held on by spring clips, with push fit high tension lead sockets. Distributor caps can develop faults which are difficult to see with the naked eye. This causes misfiring, often only when the engine is under load, so it will tick over sweetly but becomes rough under acceleration.
